SOAP FACTORY

A 19th-century warehouse-turned-art-gallery that pushes the envelope in Minneapolis’ North Loop.

The building that houses the Soap Factory dates back to 1882, but it became a gallery in the 1980s. Over the near century, it has managed to maintain its bygone aura with exposed brick walls and factory-infused metal girders. Work from modern artists—many of whom exemplify a unique intersection of technology and art—is often on display in what the Factory deems a “laboratory for artists’ ideas.”

Every Halloween season part of the gallery transforms into The Haunted Basement, a terrifyingly immersive experience that gets creepier year after year with the help of dedicated actors and artists. Those brave enough to descend the steps test both their will and sanity—but be warned that actors are allowed to touch.
