An Evening to Support the Preservation of Native American Languages and Cultures
Saturday, March 18th from 7:00 to 8:30 pm
Presented by: The Language Conservancy
Today, Native American languages are on the brink of extinction. One Native American language is being lost every 5 months. This loss is largely the result of an 1870s U.S. government policy making it illegal to teach tribal languages in any American schools. This policy lasted until the 1980s!
Restoring Silenced Voices will feature the screening of Rising Voices, an award-winning documentary about the Lakota people’s efforts to save their language and culture. On hand will be Lakota speakers from Standing Rock reservation who will share with you their work to preserve their language, along with members of The Language Conservancy who are working with tribes across the country to save their languages and cultures before they are gone.
Restoring Silenced Voices will be held at the Hilton Hotel, 3900 American Boulevard West, Bloomington, MN 55437. 7:00 – 8:30 PM.
Tickets are $20 each or 5 for $ 50 online ($25 each or 5 for $60 at the door).
All proceeds go to benefit The Language Conservancy’s preservation work.
