The Cowles Center for Dance & the Performing Arts and James Sewell Ballet will once again present Myron Johnson’s holiday classic “Nutcracker (not so) Suite” this December at The Cowles Center. 2017 marks the third year that Johnson’s irreverent take on “The Nutcracker,” originally created in 1993 for Ballet of the Dolls, will take place on The Cowles Center stage.
“Nutcracker (not so) Suite” famously substitutes the Nutcracker with Barbie and Ken who lead Marie on a wild adventure through 1960s New York City. Johnson, known for his inventive style, insists there are plenty of surprises in store for this iteration of the show.
“This is a show that needs to be different every year,” he says. “There are musts, of course—like Barbie and Ken—but part of the thrill of the show is that there are surprises every time we do it.”
The run will once again feature three Naughty Nutcracker performances, featuring a bawdier, racier version of the show.
